18-Year-Old Killed In Guardrail Car Crash

An 18-year-old died in a fatal car crash in Broward County. The County sent her father a bill for the guardrail that killed her.

“The crash occurred when her car left the road and crashed into a truck and then into the guardrail, it didn’t crumble or redirect the car like it was supposed to, the Post reports. Instead, it punctured the car, slammed into her, and pushed her into the backseat. She died instantly.

The truck driver identified as a 30-year-old sustained few minor injuries in the crash.

Only a week earlier, the Broward County authorities had decided to stop using that specific type of guardrail over concerns about how it performed in crashes over 45 mph. The speed limit on the road where she died was 65 mph.

Flabbergasted by the bill to remove the damaged guardrail and install a new one, the 18-year-old’s dad refused to pay it.

The Martin County Department of Transportation has since apologized for sending the bill, saying it was a mistake somewhere in processing and the family doesn’t have to pay it.

The department says it doesn’t usually send bills in fatal accidents. There are still  thousands of the guardrails like the one that killed the 18-year-old lining Broward County roads and her dad wants them replaced.

FHP says, it will be removing the guardrails from roads with speed limits greater than 45 mph.

Accident attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate crash. “This is a serious accident resulting in a fatality. We hope the investigators can quickly determine what caused the accident. Please be careful and obey the speed limits whenever you are driving a motorcycle, car, SUV or truck. We hope that all parties involved consult with an experienced trial lawyer. If you have been injured in an accident, call my office for a free consultation and find out what your rights are.”
