A police sergeant said, the 56-year-old man, also a part-owner of the Fort Pierce City Thunder, was the only occupant in the sport utility vehicle when it slammed into a school bus in Lakewood Park.

The death of the 56-year old driver follows an announcement that he had been indicted by a federal grand jury.

Police say it’s too early to tell if the collision was intentional.

Eleven students in the school bus were rushed to a nearby hospital with life threatening injuries. Four others had died at the scene, according to FHP. The driver of the school bus was uninjured.

Reports said, that the 56-year old driver had stepped down at Chesapeake and founded American Energy Partners, where he was Chairman and CEO.

The Department of Justice said in a statement, that the 56-year old driver was suspected of orchestrating a scheme between two large energy companies, which are not named in the indictment. The companies would decide ahead of time who would win bids, with the winner then allocating an interest in the leases to the other company, according to the statement.

In a statement after his indictment, the 56-year old had denied violating antitrust laws.
