Bicyclist Hurt In West Palm Hit-And-Run Crash Dies

WEST PALM BEACH — A man struck by a hit-and-run motorist as he bicycled across a West Palm Beach expressway ramp has died, his brother confirmed.

City police still are trying to find the person who knocked down a man, nine days short of his 60th birthday. He was struck on an Interstate 95 ramp at Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.

The motorist was heading east on Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard and turned left onto the northbound entrance ramp to Interstate 95, then struck the bicyclist, who was crossing the ramp.

The family doesn’t believe he ever regained consciousness. He died, his brother said from Texas.

“He was in such fine physical condition,” he said. “That’s what’s so sad.”

He grew up in east Texas and came to Florida about four decades ago for help with a substance-abuse dependence, according to his brother.

He owned a van, but rode his bike 10 miles to work from his home west of West Palm Beach.

He said he also wants to increase awareness about helmets. He said his brother was not wearing one when he was struck.

As for the driver, Bryan Wright said the collision could have been an accident, and he still wishes the person would come forward.

“Could have been impaired. Didn’t have insurance. Had a warrant. Could have been in trouble. Could have had a suspended license. No license. I’m going down the list about why someone left,” he said.

But maybe, he said, perhaps someone was in the car with the driver, or was on the phone with him or her. Or the driver told either a relative or a friend in confidence or a moment of carelessness.

Police believe the car is a light-colored 1998 to 2000 Toyota RAV4, with damage to the driver’s front side.

The department said it had checked out some 150 vehicles across Palm Beach County that matched the description, “with negative results.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Palm Beach police at 561-215-0498.

Attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded about the crash.  “A Hit-and-run is one of the worst type of accidents.  When that person that fled the scene is caught you have rights that are different then in a regular car crash.  Make sure you speak to a licensed professional about your rights”.
