, . Jeremiah Nicolas Lopez, 6, of Loxahatchee Groves died after he was struck by a vehicle while he rode on a skateboard in suburban West Palm Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.
The elementary school student was struck by a 2009 Jeep Cherokee on the 4500 block of Bensel Street in suburban West Palm Beach, off Military Trail northwest of Palm Beach International Airport. He died minutes after.
According to PBSO, Jeremiah was either kneeling or sitting on the skateboard when he came out of a driveway. This happened on Bensel Street. The front of the Jeep hit Jeremiah then ran over the boy before coming to a stop.
A 39-year-old man of suburban West Palm Beach was driving the Jeep when it struck the boy. The crash took place just a couple of houses from the driver’s residence on Bensel Street, the sheriff’s office said.
The 4500 block of Bensel Street is filled with single-story, attached residential units and dead ends into a cul-de-sac. Jeremiah entered the roadway from a wide driveway that leads onto the street from a small parking lot.
PBSO’s report states that Jeremiah was not wearing either safety or reflective equipment.
First emergency responders arrived at the site of the crash soon after the accident happened. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the crash.
