Bicyclist Injured In Two-Vehicle Crash On University Drive in Pembroke Pines

A bicyclist was gravely injured after being struck by an SUV in the 1200 block of South University Drive.

Police said a woman, 19, was driving a black 2017 Hyundai Tucson north along University Drive when she and her passenger heard a loud “bang.”  The bang turned out to be a person on a bicycle.

A bicyclist was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. His bicycle was found mangled near the scene of the crash.  “The passenger and the driver didn’t see the person before impact,” Pembroke Pines police Sgt. John Baker said.

The young woman and her 20-year-old passenger said the airbags deployed. Fearing the SUV was on fire, they jumped out of the car, Baker said.  “The driver told the passenger, ‘Get out, get out, get out,’ and they jumped out of the car, and the car continued northbound with nobody in it,” Baker said.

Finally, the SUV crashed into a concrete pole about twelve blocks away from where the bicyclist laid badly injured.   A passerby reached into the SUV and turned off the ignition to prevent any further harm, Baker said.

Crews are working to clear the debris left from the crash.  The crash is still being investigated.  It is best to take an alternate route around University Drive.  The best route would be to take Flamingo Blvd.

Palm Beach County attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate accident with a death:   “This is a tragic accident and hopefully law enforcement will be able to find out what was the cause.  Please be careful whenever you are driving a motorcycle, car, SUV or truck. This is especially true when if there are bicyclists sharing the road.  If you have been injured in an accident, call my office for a free consultation to find out what are your rights”.
