Pedestrian Struck And Injured By Texting Driver In Miami-Dade County

A pedestrian was waiting to cross the road when he was struck by a car whose driver was texting. He suffered extensive injuries.

The victim identified as Tim Carlos was left injured when a 26-year-old driver, glancing down at his phone lost control along State Road 836 in Miami-Dade County.

According to reports, preliminary investigations revealed that the driver sent four texts and received six messages in the seven minutes leading up to the crash. He couldn’t slow down, spun out of control and hit Carlos as he stood near the road.

The 41-year-old victim suffered a broken back, two broken legs, a broken arm and a broken jaw. His face was sliced and mouth opened, a police officer said.

He lay unconscious as paramedics transported him to the hospital. Considering the extent of his injuries, Carlos is expected to face multiple surgeries and months of rigorous physical therapy on his path to recovery.

The driver may be charged with reckless driving with bodily injury. A police spokeswoman said she intends to bring media attention to distracted driving and an appeal for change. She added that high school students should be given sobering lessons about distracted driving and its deadly consequences.

The crash caused traffic delays in some parts of State Road 836 (the Dolphin Expressway) in Miami-Dade County.  Authorities are investigating the crash. Please drive with caution and stay safe.
