Three people are dead following a crash on Belvedere Road between Turnpike and Pike Road, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said. A fourth person was injured but in stable condition at a hospital following the incident.
The crash occurred after a shooting in which people in one vehicle were shooting at those in another, the sheriff’s office noted.
The shooting and crash have shut down Belvedere Road from Jog Road east of Florida’s Turnpike to Skees Road on the west side. The roadway, near the Golden Lakes neighborhoods, in suburban West Palm Beach was also affected. Drivers are advised to use alternative routes.
Authorities had not identified those who had died or were injured as at the time of this report. Investigations are ongoing to unravel the motive for the shooting and the cause of the crash. A tractor-trailer was nearby, but it wasn’t immediately known if it was involved in the wreck.
According to an eyewitness who identified herself as Raven Minor, 20, she was sitting in her home when she heard several gunshots. “It was going off like a machine gun,” she said. “I don’t know if they were shooting at each other or what. Then I just heard a big ‘boom’ like an explosion.” Minor said she walked out to see one vehicle with extensive damage. As police arrived, she and others were asked to clear the scene.
PBSO said it believed a confrontation at Madison Chase, an apartment complex on the north side of Belvedere Road and east of Sansbury’s Way, led to the shooting and crash. Detectives from the PBSO’s Violent Crimes Division were on the scene. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS (8477).
