A bicyclist was struck by a vehicle near the West Hillsboro Blvd exit ramp of I-95. This happened in Deerfield Beach, a Broward County Fire Rescue spokesperson said.
The crash involed a bicycle and a utility vehicle. It occurred near the intersection of W Hillsboro Blvd and SW 12th Avenue. The male bicyclist, whose identity has not yet been released, was injured in the crash.
According to police, the bicyclist was riding southbound on SW 12th Avenue. He was crossing the intersection, when he was struck by the vehicle. The vehicle was headed east on W Hillsboro Blvd. He suffered serious injuries in the crash. Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash happened. They transported the victim to Broward Regional Medical Center.
The intersection, just east of Interstate 95, has long been one of the town’s busiest. The crash led to traffic delays and forced drivers to utilize a nearby gas station and a convenience store’s parking lots to get around the accident site; the scene remains under investigation.
Trenda McPherson, State Bicycle-Pedestrian Safety Program manager described the incident as a “sad one.” Florida’s pedestrian and bicycle-focused Initiative, “AlertTodayFlorida.com” is creating awareness to reduce pedestrian and bicyclist fatalities via its “Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow” campaign. The initiative seeks to remind all roadway users to be alert, and obey traffic rules.
