A 53-year-old man died after crashing his vehicle on Florida’s Turnpike in St Lucie County, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
The crash occurred while he was driving northbound on Florida’s Turnpike near the ramp in Okeechobee Road. According to the FHP spokeswoman, the man from Fort Pierce, and his passenger were stuck in a Chevy Malibu after it was struck by a tractor-trailer.
The Malibu driver and his passenger, whose age is unknown, were taken to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, both with serious injuries, according to the report. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, according to a Highway Patrol report.
When troopers arrived on the scene, they had to close all northbound lanes near mile marker 170 about 18 miles north of Okeechobee Road for about two hours while troopers investigated the scene.
The report said the driver lost control of the vehicle, which ran off the road and flipped over. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Please avoid this area until the crash scene is cleared. The best alternate route would be to take Interstate 95.
Accident attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate crash: “This is serious accident with injuries just outside of Ft. Pierce. We hope for everyone’s sake that it can be quickly discovered what the cause was. It has been indicated that the driver of the truck lost control. Please be careful and obey the speed limits whenever you are driving a motorcycle, car, SUV or truck. This is especially true when there are children in the area.
