One person was killed and 17 others were injured in a crash involving a pickup truck and a van on Alligator Alley in Broward County.
According to the information provided by Battalion Chief Michael Kane, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, a pickup truck slammed into a van on the Alligator Alley stretch of Interstate 75 in Broward County near Fort Lauderdale.
The rear-end accident sent the van rolling into the center median of the highway. Then several passengers were ejected from the vehicle, Kane said. Authorities say they are still investigating what caused the crash.
“The van was filled with friends and family from Fort Lauderdale. They were returning home from a baseball tournament in Fort Myers when the crash happened,” Lt. Alvaro Feola, a spokesman for the Florida Highway Patrol, said.
One of the victims, a 45-year-old woman, was pinned under the van. People at the scene freed her using a floor-jack, Kane said. An unidentified person was pronounced dead at the scene, Kane said.
Twelve victims were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, six of whom were airlifted to Broward Health Medical Center. Four people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The injured victims ranged in age from 10 to 18, Feola said.
Various agencies assisted authorities in Broward County, including Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.
South Florida personal injury attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate crash: “What was supposed to be a enjoyable baseball tournament turned tragic for the families involved in this fatal rear end accident. Hopefully the remaining survivors all make full recoveries from this horrific accident. Please be careful and obey the speed limits and traffic lights whenever you are driving a motorcycle, car, SUV or truck. This is especially true when there are children present. We hope that all parties involved consult with an experienced trial lawyer. If you have been injured in an accident, call my office for a free consultation to find out what are your rights”.
