A car crashed into Publix killing two people including 71-year-old Eric Small in West Delray Beach, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
The accident happened when an 80-year-old woman struck Eric Small, age 71 years, in front of the Delray Beach Publix. The driver was near the Publix in the shops of San Marco plaza on Jog Road north of Atlantic Avenue when she lost control of her car. She reportedly accelerated her car – a Kia Soul – and hit the victim before crashing into the store, according to the PBC Sheriff’s Office.
The supermarket chain store located on Jog Road in West Delray Beach has several damaged windows as a result of the crash.
Investigators stated that Small had just walked out of the store when the elderly driver struck him and then hit the store front. Both the driver and the pedestrian, later died at Delray Medical Center, the report revealed.
“The woman was said to be going about 40 mph when she went through the window and hit a person,” Jim Miller said. Miller was volunteering with the Disabled American Veterans. “She also hit that pole right there,” he added.
No official word yet on what caused the driver to accelerate and crash. A source at the scene said she possibly had a heart attack.
Accident attorney Jason Weisser of Schuler, Halvorson, Weisser, Zoeller and Overbeck responded to this unfortunate crash: “This is serious accident that left two dead in Delray Beach. At this time we don’t know what happened to cause the driver to lose control, strike a pedestrian and then run into the Publix. We hope for everyone’s sake that it can be quickly discovered what the cause was. If you have been injured in an accident, call my office for a free consultation to find out what are your rights”.
