Woman Charged In Fatal Crash That Killed Two
A Pompano Beach woman has been charged in a fatal crash that killed a couple and left a 6-year-old girl an orphan, according to the police.
The 54-year-old woman of Pompano Beach is charged with driving under the influence in the fatal crash that killed her two passengers, Benyamin Benyamin and his wife Zafrit “Sofie” Ruvio Benyami. However, police added that she will not be arrested because it’s a misdemeanor charge.
She failed to yield the right of way to a Honda Element traveling on a green light, according to what the Honda’s driver and passenger told police. Due to failure to yield right of way, the Honda T-boned the Mercedes car at the intersection of Commercial Boulevard and Northwest 70th Avenue in Lauderhill.
The impact from the collision caused both cars’ airbags to deploy. The Mercedes’ passenger side was struck in the collision. Firefighters had to cut the door off the car to extricate Zafrit Benyamin who was trapped in the car, police reported.
The crash killed the couple on impact. Their 6-year-old daughter, Shiraz, wasn’t in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
The couple were at a bar to celebrate Benny Benyamin’s birthday prior to the fatal crash. A Lauderhill patrol officer saw the driver getting out of her car, the police report said, “wearing a blue dress and a party band,” and she had a “strong smell of alcohol.”
The couple was described by friends as devoted parents who spent years struggling to have a child.
