A Stuart man is in critical condition after his car was struck by a semi-truck. The semi-truck lost control, swerved and struck a passing SUV, the Stuart Fire Rescue Crew said.
The accident occurred on SE Federal Rd. approaching Monterey Rd, officers with the Stuart Police Department said. The 22-year-old semi driver who was traveling north on SE Federal Rd. was reported to have been traveling at 100mph when he lost control of his vehicle as he approached Monterey Rd, authorities said. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to strike a concrete barrier, overturn and become engulfed in flames, an eyewitness reported.
First emergency responders arrived soon after the crash happened and both victims were transported to a Regional Medical Center. Both victims suffered 3rd-degree burns and were said to have lost extensive body tissue and fluid. Both are in critical conditions in the ICU.
Reacting to the crash, the Stuart Fire Rescue spokesman said the fiery crash was as a result of traveling at high speed. He appealed to drivers to obey traffic laws; speed limits and to be mindful of other road users.
Officers with the Stuart Police Department cleared the debris from the crash in Stuart. Stuart Fire Rescue assisted SPD to clear SE Federal Rd. approaching Monterey Rd.
Delays are expected in the area. The crash remains under investigation.
