A bicyclist was severely injured after he was struck by a tractor trailer and thrown into a tree while trying to cross I-95 near the Congress Avenue exit ramp, authorities said.
The bicyclist, a 27-year-old West Palm Beach man, was rushed to a Regional Health Medical Center with critical life-threatening injuries, said a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office.
The bicyclist was traveling on the southbound lane prior to the accident. He attempted to cross the road on I-95 near Congress Avenue exit. A tractor trailer traveling on the same lane lost control and moved onto the center median when he entered the path of the bicycle. As he tried to double back to the median, he struck the bike, Sheriff’s office said.
Both I-95 north and south bound lanes at Congress Avenue are currently shut down due to an accident involving a tractor trailer. Emergency crews are currently on scene with a crane attempting to clear the debris of the wreck causing delays of up to almost an hour.
Drivers are being advised to use the Linton Boulevard or Yamato Road exits as alternate routes, or take the turnpike if they have not gotten on I-95.
The driver of the tractor trailer, a 52-year-old man of Congress Avenue, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the crash report stated. He was not injured. Neither driver impairment nor excessive speed appeared to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Investigators urge drivers to make use of alternative routes.
