A woman is in a critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in a road-rage incident on the southbound Interstate 95 exit ramp to Gateway Boulevard, Florida Highway Patrol authorities say.
The woman was intentionally hit by a vehicle in what authorities called a road-rage incident. She was not in a vehicle at the time of the crash, though it is unclear how she ended up on the ramp.
First emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and the victim was transported to Delray Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The driver fled the scene, according to authorities. FHP officials said they had identified a possible suspect in the case, but had not released any further information.
The road rage incident in Boynton Beach shut down two exit ramps on Interstate 95 just north of Gateway Boulevard. Authorities closed the ramp and part of the interstate for hours while they investigated. Both northbound and southbound ramps for the Gateway exit of I-95 are now open to traffic after the road-rage incident.
“Florida Highway Patrol responded to a crash on I-95 SB near the exit ramp to Gateway Blvd. Preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle struck a person outside of their car. The victim is at Delray Medical Center in serious condition,” the Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman said.
The investigation into the incident continues.
It will be recalled that a different victim was also shot at the same location last year. Antoine Pernell Smith, 31, was fatally shot in his car as he drove toward the southbound Interstate 95 entrance ramp on Gateway Boulevard. Boynton Beach police have not publicly mentioned road-rage as a possible motive in Smith’s killing. However, the people believed to have shot Smith were suspected of shooting at a BMW on I-95 north of Lantana Road shortly after the killing.
