A couple was rushed to the hospital after a fiery crash on Indrio Road and Kings Highway, the St. Lucie County Fire District said.
Florida Highway Patrol officials released the names of two seriously injured people who were pulled from their fiery vehicle as Charles Gables, 69, and Katherine Russ, 78. The Fort Pierce residents remained in serious condition, according to an FHP news release.
Firefighters responded to the scene, according to fire officials. Bystanders pulled the couple out of the car before fire crews arrived. The couple was transported to the hospital in serious condition. No word on what caused the crash.
The couple’s 2015 Dodge Journey rolled over and caught fire at Indrio Road and Kings Highway after a collision with another vehicle, said Brenda Stokes, spokeswoman for the St. Lucie County Fire District.
According to an FHP press release, Charles Gables was driving north on Kings Highway when a vehicle rear ended his 2015 Dodge Journey. The impact of the collision caused the car to leave the roadway and traveled onto the grassy shoulder until it collided with a utility pole, FHP said.
The car then spun around, hit another utility pole and flipped over before coming to a rest with its wheels facing west. Some debris from the vehicle hit a truck parked at the McDonald’s at the intersection. The car went up in flames after. Bystanders pulled Charles Gables and Katherine Russ from the vehicle before first responders arrived on scene, Stokes said.
Both were transported to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center & Heart Institute, according to FHP.
“If not for the bystanders that pulled the couple from the burning car … this could have been a very different outcome,” Stokes said.
FHP is investigating the crash. Alcohol was not a factor, it determined.
