A pickup truck is involved in a horrific crash that put an 11-month-old baby in critical condition at an area hospital.
According to the police, the pickup truck driver went through a stop sign on Beeline Highway, north of Northlake Boulevard, Palm Beach Gardens plowing into the car carrying the baby and splitting the car in half. The impact sent the baby — in its safety seat — flying into the backyard of a nearby house.
The driver and mother of the baby was in fair condition, according to a Palm Beach Gardens Police spokeswoman. The baby was listed in critical but stable condition at the Children’s Medical Center, according to police.
The speeding driver, who was not injured, attempted to flee but was quickly captured.
The Palm Beach driver, 32, faces possible felony vehicular assault charges. Initial investigations indicate he may have fled when he noticed a police car behind him.
A crash report said a “large amount of marijuana” was found in his truck after police secured a search warrant. The report stated that the police vehicle had not yet turned on its lights or sirens and had not attempted to stop the pickup truck.
“He (the pickup driver) saw a police car behind him and panicked and sped away,” Palm Beach Gardens Police Department said. According to court records, the pickup driver has several drug convictions, plus a conviction for fleeing police.
This marked the second time in three days that individuals fleeing police were involved in traffic accidents.
