Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Sergeant Mark Wysocky indicated in a press release that a firefighter was listed in critical condition in a Fort Pierce hospital. According to Sgt. Wysocky, the man who was off duty at the time was rushed to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center immediately after the accident.

The FHP press release stated that a vehicle driven by a 79-year-old man was westbound on S.W. Sixth Street in his vehicle while the victim was traveling southbound on S.W. 11th Avenue.

The Toyota Corolla driver was attempting a left turn into the southbound lane of S.W. 11th Ave., while the Okeechobee County Fire/Rescue firefighter was trying to turn left onto N.W. Sixth Street. “Both entered the intersection and collided,” stated the release.

The FHP release also stated that both drivers were not wearing a seat belt prior to the collision. No one has been charged in the incident, added the release.

Both lanes at S.W. Sixth Street and S.W. 11th Avenue are currently shut down due to the accident. Emergency crews are currently on scene with a crane attempting to clear the debris of the wreck causing delays. The Toyota Corolla driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, the crash report stated. He was not injured. Neither driver impairment nor excessive speed appeared to be factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing. Investigators urge drivers to make use of alternative routes.
