72-Year-Old Driver Injured In Two-Vehicle Crash Near Fellsmere
A truck driver lost control, prompting a crash that closed down the northbound lane of I-95 near Fellsmere exit ramp for a considerable length of time and spilled fuel, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
According to troopers, 72-year-old tractor-trailer driver was driving northbound on I-95 near Fellsmere, Indian River County when another driver rear-ended him, causing him to lose control of the truck. It collided with the median of the roadway and spilled fuel.
There was no resulting fire or explosions from the incident due to the frantic efforts of the first responders and fire service. First emergency responders arrived at the site of the crash not long after the crash happened. When troopers arrived, they found the driver with serious injuries. He was transported to a regional medical centre for treatment.
An eye witness, who lives close-by, described the event as “simply terrible.” “It all happened within split seconds. It’s so pitiful,” he added. Roads in the streets were shut down to enable the officials to investigate the crash. Authorities are withholding names until the moment that relatives can be told.
The northbound lane of the I-95 near Fellsmere has remained closed. Drivers are advised to make use of alternative routes.
The crash stays under investigation, FHP said.
