Four people were killed in a three-car crash in Delray Beach along 2500 South Federal Highway, authorities say.
The victims are identified as Jorge Claudio of Argentina, 50; Veronica Mariel Raschiotto, 42; and her two children, Diego Martinez Raschiotto, 8, and 6-year-old Mia Martinez Raschiotto.
Witnesses told Delray Beach police they saw a driver speeding in a grey Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck southbound on South Federal Highway. According to police, the driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting traffic in front of him and instead rear-ended a minivan waiting to make a left turn. The harsh impact led the cars to cross the median into northbound traffic and also collide with a Buick Encore.
“This was an extremely violent crash. It crushed that minivan. Four people were killed in the three-car crash,” said the DBPD spokeswoman.
The three cars were stuck together following the crash, and officials used hydraulic tools in order to pull them apart and locate the victims.
All four occupants of the white minivan were pronounced dead at the scene while the two occupants of the Buick Encore did not suffer serious injuries. The names and ages of the four occupants in the minivan are yet to be released.
Of the two occupants aboard the pickup truck, one was taken as a trauma alert to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries.
A witness, who chose not to be identified, said about the driver of the pickup truck, “He was just going so fast and right when we saw it, I and my brother said ‘this is going to be bad. This is an accident right away.’ I walked over there and I just saw bodies I started hysterically crying. Like, that could’ve been me,” the witness said.
Delray Beach Police say the 21-year-old driver is cooperating with investigators and has been released from custody pending the conclusion of the investigation. Anyone with information about the fatal crash is asked to call DBPD Traffic Homicide Investigator Henry Lugo at 561-243-7800.
