A woman was fatally injured in a head on crash along US Highway 1 in Palm Beach Gardens.
Emergency services were at the scene of a crash which left a stream of debris on the busy highway. According to the FHP, a blue Nissan Infinity was traveling in the northbound lane of the road when the driver lost control of his vehicle.
The driver of the Nissan crossed into the southbound lane of the road, colliding with a Volkswagen Passat in the process. The impact sent the Passat barreling off the left shoulder of the road where it crashed against a street lamp.
The driver of the Nissan Infinity was injured in the crash. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Emergency services worked for hours to evacuate the occupants of the Volkswagen Passat from the mangled car frame.
One of the occupants of the car, a 45-year-old woman, had her right hand caught in the door frame, the hand was badly damaged in the crash. Reports reaching us indicate that the hand will have to be amputated due to the severity of the damage. The second occupant, a backseat passenger in the Passat was also fatally injured, but is in a stable condition at the moment.
Police say the driver of the Nissan will be tested for blood alcohol content, it is not yet confirmed if alcohol is a factor in the crash. Investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the crash.
