A man from Pahokee sustained serious injuries after colliding with an 18-wheeler along US Highway 1, in Vero Beach.
Florida Highway Patrol Officers investigated an accident involving two vehicles along US Highway 1. According to a spokesperson for the FHP, the crash occurred when a pickup truck struck an 18-wheeler semi from the rear, on the northbound carriage of the road.
The 46-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler was traveling northbound on the right lane of the road; a Ford pickup truck also traveled on the same lane. Subsequently, reports stated that the truck crashed into the rear of the 18-wheeler on high speed.
Emergency services arrived on the scene to attend to the injured victims and clear the wreckage.
The 43-year-old Pahokee driver of the Ford truck sustained multiple fractures in the crash. Consequently, EMS transported the driver to a specialist hospital for treatment. Additionally, the front seat passenger in the truck was lucky to have survived with minor injuries. Paramedics attended to him on the scene.
Meanwhile, the driver of the 18-wheeler semi was unhurt in the crash. Authorities tested him for blood alcohol level.
Police say the driver of the 18-wheeler may have applied his brakes abruptly, leaving the truck with little room to avoid a rear-end collision. Investigations are still ongoing into the cause of the crash.
