A pregnant woman sustained fatal injuries which led to the death of her unborn baby in a head-on collision on Emerson Avenue in Fort Pierce.
Authorities say the pregnant woman, who is in her later thirties, lost her baby after sustaining multiple injuries from a crash involving two vehicles. According to police reports, a Kia SUV traveled on the southbound lane of the road when it crossed into the northbound lane, facing oncoming traffic.
The Kia continued in its trajectory until it collided with a Chevrolet sedan, which was on the northbound lane of Emerson Avenue.
Both cars sustained heavy damage from the crash. A pregnant woman in the front seat of the Chevrolet sedan suffered injuries in the crash. Emergency responders rushed her to the hospital. Unfortunately, medical staff confirmed her baby did not survive the impact of the crash. Presently, officials report the pregnant mother is in critical condition.
The driver of the Chevrolet sedan also sustained multiple injuries. EMS transported the driver to the hospital via ambulance.
Authorities took the 42-year-old man driving the Kia SUV into police custody. He sustained minor injuries in the crash, and paramedics treated him on the scene.
Police are investigating claims that he was intoxicated before the crash; however, these claims are yet to be confirmed. The Florida Highway Patrol is in charge of the crash investigation.
