The man who is the oldest child of seven said he is learning to be a parent to six after a car crash claimed the life of their mother and father. The 23-year old was the only sibling who wasn’t in the vehicle.

The family was returning home to St. Lucie County from a camping trip when their car was sideswiped by a pickup truck. The collision sent the SUV off the road into a creek where it became partially submerged, according to the news report.

Two of the children were rushed to the hospital in critical condition. The four other children were treated for bruises and other minor injuries. Their parents were also rushed to the hospital, where they later died.

The eldest son was working when he heard the gut-wrenching news.

“It was like someone tearing out my heart. It hurt a lot,” he told FHP.

He said that he was forced to make decisions about one brother’s emergency surgery moments after learning his parents died.

Friends and family have helped take care of his younger siblings, but he is still figuring out how to support them all.

FHP spokeswoman said the crash is under investigation and charges are pending.
