Mikayla Penn, 18, Killed In Crash In Palm Beach County

18-year-old Mikayla Penn of Palm Beach County was riding in the passenger seat of a Mini Cooper, driven by her classmate at Community Christian School, when the driver suddenly lost control on Westbound I-75 in Palm Beach County, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

The 18-year old girl died at the scene. The driver was seriously injured after she left the roadway, launching her vehicle into a tree so hard that the tree was uprooted. The teen is recovering at a hospital in the Palm Beach County, FHP reports.

The girls were headed to a mall in the county on senior skip day to buy bathing suits for their upcoming spring break when the crash occurred, according to the station.

“You know, spring break is next week and we come out here to the mall,” said another of their classmates, who knew both victims and had a class with the teens. “We come out here to shop.”

School officials said in a statement that they were “heartbroken and saddened” by news of the fatal crash.

“We ask our community to pray with us and with our students as we grieve this devastating loss,” the school’s headmaster said. “We also ask for prayer for the recovery of our injured student and healing for our school family.”
