A driver injured nine people, four seriously, when he slammed his box truck into several cars, according to officials.
Cops say the driver, who has not been identified, was driving a large Enterprise rental truck north on 10th Avenue when he began his path of destruction. He smashed into a total of seven vehicles between 42nd and 44th streets.
The truck driver ditched his banged-up ride a little north of 43rd Street and started yelling that someone was after him, according to a 53-year old witness, who saw the chaos unfold as he was catching the Jets game at a bar across the street.
“He was in a panicked state as he jumped out of the truck screaming, ‘Help me, help me he’s chasing me,’” the witness told FHP.
Moments later, a man in a black Mercedes Benz pulled up saying the truck driver had hit his and several other cars.
The witness grabbed the truck driver to keep him from fleeing and to stop him from fighting with the Mercedes owner in the middle of the street, he said.
“I had to keep them both apart until police officers intervened,” he said.
In total, nine people went to the hospital including the truck driver and the police officer, officials said. Five had minor injuries and three were listed as serious.
The incident is still under investigation.
