A 3-year-old girl was killed and her mother and grandparents were injured in Martin County when a garbage truck slammed into their car, authorities said.
The 52-year-old grandmother, who was driving north on Jensen Beach, slowed down to avoid a raised metal sewer cap on the roadway.
A private trash hauler rear-ended the silver Chevy Malibu, which was pushed into a metal pole and crumpled, killing a little girl from Martin County.
“Everyone was screaming. They were trapped. There was blood all over the place,” said a parking lot attendant, who rushed over to help with several other garage employees.
They pulled out the grandmother and the little girl’s mother, 37, who was sitting in the back seat with her child. The toddler’s grandfather, 52, was traveling in the passenger’s seat.
The heartbroken mom was screaming and, “calling for her baby that was trapped,” said the parking employee. “It all happened so fast. It was shocking.”
All four family members were rushed to Martin County Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead.
Police said their injuries were all minor and they were all in stable condition.
The truck driver remained on the scene as FHP investigated the crash.
No arrests were made, police said.
