Police Officer Driving Wrong Way Causes Crash That Killed A Driver
A wrong-way crash on Sebastian left one man dead and an off-duty Indian River County police officer seriously injured and facing charges, Florida Highway Patrol officials said.
A Florida Highway Patrol officer, assigned to the Third Precinct, had been driving his 2000 Nissan Pathfinder eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Sebastian Highway when he smashed into a 2016 Ford van, according to police officials.
The van caught fire as a result of the collision and the driver, whose identity was not immediately released, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The Florida Highway Patrol officer was rushed to Delray Medical Center with serious injuries and was later charged with reckless endangerment and suspended from duty without pay.
The crash shut down the Sebastian Highway in both directions for nearly four hours.
