A mom who was standing outside her relative’s disabled car on the Martin County Expressway was killed when a motorist caused a chain-reaction collision that threw her over the guardrail, authorities and family members said.
The victim was in her nephew’s 1997 Toyota Rav4 on their way home from a family wedding when her sister-in-law, who was driving a 2005 Chevy, got a flat tire, relatives said.
The car carrying the victim and two of her young children pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway near Palm City Avenue exit in front of the Toyota to help with the flat tire.
The victim, who warned her family members to get off the highway for safety reasons, was standing on the highway when a man, 43, driving a 2011 BMW westbound ploughed into the back of the Chevy, according to relatives.
The mother of four from Guinea was struck by the Chevy during the chain reaction, and the impact sent her body flying off the elevated highway and onto Palm City Avenue. The victim was pronounced dead at a hospital in Martin County.
“My wife left me to go to a wedding and she didn’t come back. She died. Somebody drove into them,” said her 27-year old husband.
FHP made it known that the case is still under investigation.
