A 13-year-old girl was killed when a car slammed into her as she walked to classes at a school in St. Lucie County, said authorities and a family friend.
The accident happened on a street listed as a priority in a Lakewood Park plan to reduce traffic fatalities in the city.
One of the girl’s distraught teachers from another High School was among the first to discover the grisly scene.
The girl was walking with a 13-year-old female friend across Lakewood Park near St. Lucie Villa in the County when they were struck by a Chevy sedan, officials said. The friend suffered minor leg injuries.
“I saw her friend hanging over her crying,” said a 30-year old witness. “That was a face I’ll never forget. She was a baby. That’s something you never want to see.”
A lady said a woman checked the girl’s pulse and called 911.
“She said there was no pulse,” he said, adding that a teacher at the scene said the girl was her student.
Planned changes are supposed to give pedestrians increased crossing time at intersections.
