A speeding SUV crashed into a Palm Beach County supermarket, hitting a clerk and four others before coming to a stop.
The elderly driver hit the gas pedal instead of the brake, sending her Mercedes SUV through the glass and brick facade of the Pathmark in Boca Raton, Florida Highway Patrol officials said. Five victims were seriously injured.
“It was crazy,” said a 33-year old woman who had finished her grocery shopping when the Mercedes sped past her.
“She flew inside and the two guys standing right in front were hit and really hurt,” said a witness.
Another 25-year old employee at the deli counter, said, “She took out the self-checkout machines, destroyed display dividers and ran through pipes.
“One of the self-checkout guys got nailed,” he added. “He was badly injured. He had a giant gash on his head down to the bone.”
Florida Highway Patrol officials did not identify the 72-year-old woman who was behind the wheel, but said that she “accidentally” hit the gas. No charges have been filed yet as investigations are still ongoing.
