A woman shopping at a Martin County cell-phone store was killed when a SUV came crashing through the front window, authorities said.
Other customers scrambled to lift the vehicle off of the 66-year-old victim, to no avail.
She had been seated on a bench near the front of a store on Hobe Sound in Martin County as she was waiting to be helped by store staff when the Toyota Rav 4 suddenly barreled through the glass exterior, police said.
The small SUV struck her from behind and rolled over the woman, trapping her under the rear wheels.
Customers and other stunned bystanders rushed to the badly injured woman’s aid and worked together to lift the car’s rear bumper and pull her body from beneath the tires, a Martin County police spokeswoman said.
She was transported to a hospital in Martin County, and pronounced dead hours later, police said.
A Martin County Police Officer said the 65-year old driver, reported that she was pulling into the store parking lot when she was unable to stop, according to The Post.
Police said the driver was tested for driving while intoxicated but results came back negative. The accident is still under investigation.
