The driver of a minivan fatally struck a 10-year-old girl and seriously injured her pregnant mother after he swiped the vehicle leaving a garage where he works, police said.
A 22-year old man, who works at a catering hall on 54th Street and 15th Avenue, allegedly stole the Honda Odyssey from a garage to run an errand when he struck the victims at 18th Avenue and 60th Street, police said.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the vehicle belonged to a patron attending an event at the hall, police said, but the driver was not authorized to use it.
The driver, who remained at the scene after the accident, was charged with unauthorized use of a vehicle without the owner’s consent and was slapped with a violation on an active warrant for a marijuana-based offence, police said.
The young girl was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where she died.
“The child was in bad condition,” one witness said. The young girl died at the hospital.
After being struck, the 33-year-old mother was pinned beneath the minivan, witnesses said.
The mom was rushed to Delray Medical Center, where she gave birth. She and the newborn were in stable condition.
The accident is still under investigation.
