Off-Duty Officer Involved In Deadly Crash Was Driving Wrong Way

An off-duty Broward County Officer was driving the wrong way on the Broward County Thruway, slamming head-on into another car. Both drivers were killed, police said.

A 32-year old officer was driving his Dodge Dakota pickup truck southbound in the northbound lane of the highway when he collided with a Honda CRV driven by a 59-year old.  The accident occurred near Exit 15 in Pembroke’s pines, officials said.

Both men were driving alone at the time of the crash and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Police are still trying to determine why the officer was driving the wrong way.

Officers were dispatched to the scene after a witness saw the blue pickup barreling the wrong way and called police, cops said.

By the time they arrived on scene, debris from the two vehicles laid scattered all over I -87, and both drivers were dead.

“Both drivers were killed instantly upon impact,” said a rescue worker at the scene. “When my unit arrived, they were DOA. They were still inside their cars.”

“It was a horrific scene,” he continued.

No other vehicles were involved in the wreck.
