A man who had just bought flowers for his mother was among five people injured when a speeding driver crashed into a parked minivan in the Delray Beach section of Palm Beach County, officials said.
After the crash, the rogue driver scrambled out his passenger-side window and attempted to flee on foot but was caught, authorities said.
The suspect had been speeding in his black Honda when he lost control of it in front of a flower shop at Wellington Road and the Lake Clarke Shores and slammed into the parked van, police said.
The man ran from the scene, but police caught up with him about two blocks away, officials said.
Five people, some of whom were in the parked van, were seriously hurt and rushed to Delray Medical Center. All were expected to survive.
A woman who works at the flower stand told The Post she was outside and heard a huge bang before catching a glimpse of the suspect scurrying out of his car and away from the accident scene.
“The car half-flipped and caused the minivan to bump into the truck in front of it,” she said. “Then the guy who caused the accident…tried to get away. People gathered around and started watching. The people who were hurt stayed in the van until the ambulance arrived. They were saying they hurt their necks and one guy was screaming about his back.”
The suspect received minor injuries. Charges were pending. Police have not released his name yet because he has not been formally charged. The names and ages of the victims have not been released.
