A Boca Raton truck driver has been sentenced to two years in jail for a car accident that killed a Wellington man.
The 62-year-old pleaded guilty to dangerously operating a vehicle resulting in the death of a 28-year old Wellington man in court in front of a gallery of members of both families.
The court heard that the 62-year old had driven his vehicle into the back of five stationary vehicles in Palm Beach County.
The third car was occupied by a 28-year-old man, he was driving slowly on the Boca Raton Road when the 62-year old hit him, pushing him into the truck and causing injuries that killed him at the scene.
A prosecutor told the court the 62-year old had a straight stretch of road and had a “prolonged period of inattention” before the crash.
A defense attorney said it was clearly not a case of “momentary inattention”, but told the prosecutor that the 62-year old was “genuinely remorseful” for taking the life of the 28-year old.
The judge sentenced the 62-year old to two years in jail because of the “devastating consequences of the offense and as a general deterrent”.
He will serve six months, with 18 months suspended.
