A fun sleepover for a group of young friends turned to tragedy when four girls witnessed a double fatality that claimed the life of their friend.
In video evidence before a District Court jury in Martin County, a girl told how she and her girlfriends were waiting on the side of Hobe Sound Highway for their 14-year old friend to arrive with her mother, when a green SUV struck her car as it began to turn into the driveway.
“She yelled out for us to run… I remember feeling the glass from the cars hitting on the back of my neck and my legs,” she said.
The 14-year old and her 41-year old mother died as a result of the injuries suffered in the crash.
The 32-year old driver caused the accident due to dangerous driving. The 32-year old is pleading not guilty.
A witness was driving west on the Hobe Sound Highway when cars in front slowed, causing him to slow.
The witness said a car and a green SUV passed him, crossing broken lines on a straight section of the highway. He said he was five or six cars back when he saw the SUV collide with a small blue car that was indicating to turn right.
Police are still investigating the crash.
