A 23-year old may not remember the horrific accident he caused, but a victim’s amputated leg will serve as a harsh and lifelong reminder.
In Coral Springs Magistrates Court, the 23-year old pleaded guilty to the dangerous operation of a vehicle while intoxicated.
A former SES volunteer was driving a tractor trailer when he veered across double lines and into the path of an oncoming silver utility vehicle causing it to crash into an oncoming truck near the Hillsboro Beach Highway.
The 21-year-old victim was trapped as emergency services worked to free him.
The accident stopped traffic on the Hillsboro Beach Highway.
Dash camera footage from the cabin of the truck showed the 23-year old man’s car driving erratically before the impact.
The truck driver was lucky to escape physical injury. The 21-year old was taken to a nearby hospital with significant head and spinal injuries.
While in hospital, a blood alcohol test revealed the 23-year old had a blood alcohol content of 0.195%.
