As the Martin County community pays tribute to two teen girls as police continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident which took their lives.
“This highlights the need to make sure new drivers are suitably supervised. At the end of the day, there’s a reason you have to be 16 to get a learner’s permit, and learners have stringent conditions,” said a Florida Highway Patrol officer.
The accident occurred on Hobe Sound Road as the girls were returning from school.
A 16-year old girl was pronounced dead at the scene. Her younger sister was transported to Martin County Hospital before she died.
A third passenger, a 13-year-old girl, sustained extensive but non-life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital.
A police inspector said all three girls were thrown from the Nissan 4WD, and it appeared they were not wearing seatbelts.
Police are still investigating the crash.
