The 22-year-old man investigators say hit and killed a PBSO deputy’s son, pleaded guilty to DUI manslaughter charges, according to court records.
The 22-year old man of the Acreage also pleaded guilty to driving without a license and leaving the scene of a crash involving death before the Circuit Judge. He was sentenced to 25 years for all three counts, according to court records. As part of the plea, he will not be able to obtain a driver’s license for the rest of his life. Detectives said the 22-year old had a blood-alcohol level of nearly three times the legal limit after the crash.
Investigators said the man was speeding down Seminole Pratt Whitney Road near Key Lime Boulevard when he crashed into a Buick sedan driven by 24-year-old Jason Laux. Investigators said the 22-year old was driving at 103 mph in a 45 mph zone at the time of the crash. Laux was declared dead at St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, authorities said.
Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputies found the 22-year old hiding under a car at a home just blocks away from the crash.
The 22-year old was taken to Wellington Regional Medical Center for his injuries from the crash. When deputies told him Laux died, he cried and said, “I killed someone!” He went on to ask how the 24-year-old could have died because he said he didn’t think the crash was that bad.
Toxicology results after the crash, show his blood-alcohol level was .221, nearly three times the legal limit of .08. At 6:45 a.m., his blood-alcohol level was .157, nearly double the legal limit.
Laux was the son of a longtime deputy with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. A former classmate of Laux previously told The Palm Beach Post that the father and son “were best friends.”
