Man Charged With Killing His Toddler Daughter In Fiery DUI Crash
A 29-year old man of Pembroke Pines was charged with DUI and vehicular homicide in his daughter, Sophia’s, death.
The child was not in a car seat and her parents were not using seat belts, according to a police report.
The man failed to maintain control of a Mitsubishi Outlander through a sharp curve and was speeding more than 60 mph in a 25 mph zone on the 6660 block of Miramar Parkway, the report said.
The SUV skidded off the pavement and hit a guardrail and two police vehicles. Two Miramar police officers heard the crash and arrived to find flames and smoke coming from the SUV’s engine.
The officers and good Samaritans pulled the trapped driver and his passengers, Sophia and her mother, Alana Battoo Basdeo, from the Mitsubishi.
The adults required surgeries and rehabilitation. Their daughter died at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, according to the report. One of the officers in the vehicle died at the scene. He was a police superintendent. The second had severe injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Authorities say the 29-year old driver blood-alcohol content was .10, higher than Florida’s .08 legal limit for safe driving.
