Deborah Eber Killed When Stolen Vehicle Crashes Into Her Car On Delray Highway

A 60-year-old Acreage woman died when a 17-year-old male stole a car at a Jupiter gas station, fled from police, raced down the Delray Highway, ran a red light and slammed into her vehicle, authorities said.

Deborah Eber was killed at about when her 2016 Toyota Corolla was struck by a 2015 Acura driven by the teen, according to a Palm Beach County sheriff’s report.

The Palm Beach Post is not naming the 17-year old driver, who also resides in Acreage, because he had not been criminally charged as an adult. The Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file those charges, and there was no indication what those charges would be.

One of Eber’s family members said the family was too distraught to talk about its loss. He said Eber was married with two sons and a daughter and had two grandchildren, with one on the way.

While the PBSO report, posted, covers only the crash, a Palm Beach Gardens police sergeant said his department spotted the car on the Delray Highway after Jupiter police had broadcast that they were searching for a stolen vehicle. The crash occurred moments later, police authorities said.

A Jupiter police spokeswoman said the car was stolen from the Chevron gas station at Alternate State Road A1A and Indiantown Road, just west of the Intracoastal Waterway bridge. She said the owner had walked inside the gas station and left the Acura running.

Officers spotted the stolen Acura traveling west on Indiantown Road and tried to pull it over. The driver did not stop, instead accelerated onto southbound Interstate 95, where officers lost sight of the vehicle. The vehicle later was seen exiting the interstate eastbound on Donald Ross Road.

It traveled south on Central Boulevard into Palm Beach Gardens, whose police department took over the search, the spokeswoman said. The vehicle was spotted traveling west on PGA Boulevard near Florida’s Turnpike.

Eber was declared dead at the scene. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, according to a sheriff’s crash report said.

The 17-year-old male and a 14-year-old male in his car both were taken to an undisclosed hospital. The PBSO report said the driver suffered serious injuries and his passenger had minor injuries.

The PBSO report does not indicate that either drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
