Lake Worth-Area Man Sentenced In DUI Manslaughter Case

SOUTH BAY — A suburban Lake Worth man has been sentenced to more than a year in state prison for manslaughter after he was convicted in a fatal crash that killed his passenger.

During a sentencing hearing, a Circuit Judge sentenced the 46-year old to 18 months in prison, to be followed by 10 years of probation and 100 hours of community service. He was credited with 387 days of jail time already served.

He pleaded guilty to one count each of DUI manslaughter and driving without a license. According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, he was driving a Ford F-350 pickup when he drove through a stop at a South Bay intersection and crashed into a school bus. The truck ended up in a nearby canal.

His passenger, Wilson A. Granajo, 20, of West Palm Beach died at the scene. The 46-year old sustained minor injuries. During the investigation immediately after the crash, deputies determined that he was impaired. They received a warrant to obtain a blood sample.

The driver of the school bus, who was the only occupant was not hurt, according to FHP.

The sample was collected at Lakeside Medical Center in Belle Glade, where the 46-year old was taken after the crash. According to the hospital staff, he had a blood-alcohol level of .233, nearly three times the legal limit for intoxication in Florida, according to the sheriff’s office.
