As little Lanard McDowell reached down to grab his pacifier, an unfortunate string of events played out around him.
The 22-year-old dad, who shares his son’s name, was grabbing diapers out of a coworker’s Jeep, which was stopped in the street outside the family’s 59th Street home. Four siblings were playing in the fenced-in front yard. Their mother had stepped inside to use the restroom, the victim’s dad recalls.
The victim’s 33-year old dad’s coworker drove a Jeep away from the single-family home toward Broadway. The 2-year-old leaned into the road, reaching for the pacifier he’d dropped.
The victim’s dad heard a “boom, boom,” city police records state. Then he saw little Lanard in the road. The toddler was pronounced dead not long after.
The father to the 2-year old crash victim can’t understand why his girlfriend, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter by culpable negligence in their little boy’s death.
“It’s not her fault. It’s not my fault. It’s not even the (driver’s) fault,” he said outside that 59th Street home. “It’s a tragic accident.”
The 28-year woman is being held in the Palm Beach County Jail without the possibility of release due to a probation-violation charge in an open child neglect case. Court records indicate she is on community control. If that probation charge is settled, she will be held on a $25,000 bond in the manslaughter case.
