Three South Florida families are grieving after a wrong-way crash on an Interstate 95 off-ramp in Boca Raton killed a Palm Beach County couple and a woman from Fort Lauderdale.
A family is still trying to sort out how the 35-year-old manager at Miller’s Ale House in Boca Raton came to steer his Kia Optima onto the Palmetto Park exit ramp heading in the wrong direction. Authorities report, that beside Alfeo sat Amber C. Reif, his girlfriend of more than a year, according to Alfeo’s older brother.
Both Alfeo and Reif died at the scene, according to a statement from the Florida Highway Patrol. Also dead at the scene was 57-year-old Brenda E. Walker from Fort Lauderdale.
Walker was exiting from southbound I-95 in her Hyundai Sonata when she unexpectedly met with Alfeo’s oncoming car, the highway patrol reports. The collision sent both cars spinning into an eventual stop on the ramp. Walker’s car became engulfed in flames.
The brothers, two siblings in a family of four kids, grew up in Lantana and attended Lake Worth High School. Alfeo’s brother said the couple met at work at the Ale House. Alfeo was outgoing and loved getting a laugh from his nieces and nephews.
Reif’s family, still reeling from her death, declined to comment, according to a woman identifying herself as Reif’s aunt. Reif appears to have been an accomplished synchronized swimmer, competing nationally at age 12 with the Palm Beach Coralytes, according to The Palm Beach Post.
Walker’s family also didn’t wish to comment.
Neither Alfeo nor Reif wore seatbelts. Walker was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, according to the FHP statement. The highway patrol continues to investigate the crash, including an inquiry into whether alcohol was a factor.
