A West Palm Beach teacher was driving drunk on a school day when she struck and killed a man who was walking out of a Palm Beach County hospital, officials said.
A 43-year old woman was already fleeing the scene of one accident when she slammed into the 67-year-old man who had just gotten out of a detox program at Delray Medical Center according to police and hospital sources.
The 43-year old teacher at a Preparatory High School in the County, had just gotten into an accident with a 64-year-old man driving a Kia, according to police.
The driver of the Kia trailed her as she tried to flee the scene of that crash.
In her attempt to get away, she crashed into the man as he was crossing the street at Interstate 95 and Boca Raton, cops said.
The victim, who was not immediately identified, suffered body trauma and was rushed into a medical center in the county, where he was pronounced dead, cops said.
He had just completed a detox program and was leaving the facility before he was struck, according to hospital workers who declined to give their names.
It wasn’t clear whether the program was for drug or alcohol rehabilitation.
The teacher was taken into custody on suspicion of drunk driving.
She was later charged with vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, driving while intoxicated, and driving while ability impaired.
