Police officials at Port St. Lucie Senior High School tweeted that the principal was “out of surgery and stable.” They asked for continued prayers for his recovery.

The St. Lucie County Schools superintendent also took to Twitter to offer well-wishes for the principal.

Counselors will be on campus to help staff and students cope with the tragedy.

The 32-year old principal was rushed to Lakewood Park Regional Hospital in critical condition after he was struck by a SUV in River Park in the 11200 block of Southwest 24th St.

He was reportedly coaching one of the teams when the SUV went through a fence and onto the field, hitting him before crashing into a light pole. Witnesses said, the principal was pinned under the vehicle.

Another woman was also hit by the SUV but suffered minor injuries.

It’s unknown what caused the SUV to drive on the ball field. The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and was being questioned by police.

The driver of the SUV has not been identified by police.
