Seven people died in a fiery, chain-reaction three-car crash in Martin County near Port Salerno, Florida Highway Patrol Officials said.
The fatal accident, involving three cars, took place at the intersection of S. 25th Street and West Midway Road, according to police authorities.
The preliminary investigation showed that a 26-year-old of Riviera Beach was driving his 2004 GMC Yukon south at a high rate of speed on South 25th Street when the front of his car struck the rear of a 2002 Dodge Dakota, which then caused the Dakota to strike a 2004 Chevrolet that was approaching Hobe Sound.
The impact resulted in the Dakota bursting into flames. The driver and six passengers traveling in that vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene, according to PBSO and the Florida Highway Patrol. Their identities have not been released.
The 2004 Chevrolet halted south of the intersection near North River Shores. Its driver, a 38-year-old man of Palm Beach Gardens, sustain minor non-life threatening injuries, Another 30-year-old passenger in the vehicle, is currently being treated for minor injuries at a local hospital.
The 26-year-old driver was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Florida Highway Patrol is actively investigating the crash, and toxicology results are pending.
