The girl was walking with a 15-year-old female friend across Lakewood Park near St. Lucie Villa when they were struck by a Chevy sedan officials said. The friend suffered minor leg injuries.

As the teen lay in the road wounded with her backpack still on, “I saw her friend hanging over her crying,” said a 30-year-old witness.

A lady said, a woman checked the girl’s pulse and called 911.

“She said there was no pulse,” adding that a teacher who showed up and said the girl was her student.

Planned changes are supposed to give pedestrians increased crossing time at intersections.

The driver of the Chevy Sedan is currently being interviewed by police authorities.
