Seven people were injured, including a bicyclist and three pedestrians, when two cabs collided in what police are investigating as a road rage incident in St. Lucie County, authorities said.
A Ford Explorer and a Lincoln Town Car were at the intersection of Westbound and Eastbound Street when the sedan tried to go around the SUV and struck it. The impact caused the SUV to hit a bicyclist then the driver sped off, hitting at least one other person, cops said.
“Right now, we are still investigating this as a road rage incident,” said a Florida Highway Patrol. The 52-year-old cab driver was detained by cops, but it wasn’t immediately clear what charges he was facing.
An FHP inspector said, the crash didn’t appear to be intentional.
A 40-year-old man from Astoria said, he had just left work at 120 Eastbound Avenue and was stopped at the intersection about to cross when he saw the mayhem.
“I just heard the car speeding up and I heard people screaming,” he said. “I was standing just ready to cross the street. It just seemed like it was aiming for people. There was a whole bunch of people just running scattered. He wasn’t stopping at all.”He said he saw one woman dive out of the way of the speeding car.
The drivers of the Lincoln and the SUV were both injured. The victims were taken to Delray Medical Center. None of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.
